The Triliteral Root System

The vast majority of Arabic words derive from a root of three consonants. For example the root ك-ت-ب (k-t-b) carries the semantic field of writing:

• كَتَبَ (kataba) — he wrote
• كِتَاب (kitāb) — book
• مَكْتُوب (maktūb) — written, letter

Words sharing a root share a core meaning. Learn one root and you begin to recognize dozens of Quranic words derived from it.

The Quran uses roughly 1,650 distinct roots, but the few hundred most frequent ones cover most of the text. This module follows the most efficient order: the most frequent roots first.
