Context

Revelation context of the surah

Surah-wide

Surah ad-Duha is Meccan, revealed in the early Meccan period. As related from Jundub ibn Abdullah in Bukhari and Muslim, when revelation paused for a time (the fatra) one of the polytheists said 'His Lord has forsaken him', whereupon the surah came down consoling the Prophet with the verse 'Your Lord has not forsaken you, nor does He despise you'. Recalling how the Prophet was an orphan and was cared for, the surah commands kindness to the orphan and to the one who asks.
