Ad-Dukhan 44:15

As narrated from Ibn Mas'ud in Bukhari and Muslim, when Quraysh persisted in rejecting the call and escalated their hostility, the Prophet prayed to God for seven years of famine like the years of Joseph. So severe a famine struck that people were reduced to eating bones and carrion; a man exhausted by hunger, looking at the sky, would see something like smoke. The verses "So watch for the Day when the sky brings forth a visible smoke" are linked to this event. In the end, at the appeal of Quraysh, the Prophet prayed and the famine was lifted; yet, as the verses state, they relapsed into their former ways.

Ad-Dukhan is Meccan, dated to the late Meccan period. Reports place it in the context of the severe famine that struck Mecca amid the Quraysh's persistent denial; the phrase 'a manifest smoke' has been explained either as that famine or as a sign preceding the Last Hour, with scholars differing.
