أَهُمْ خَيْرٌ أَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ أَهْلَكْنَٰهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ
Are they better or the people of Tubba' and those before them? We destroyed them, [for] indeed, they were criminals.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAd-Dukhan is Meccan, dated to the late Meccan period. Reports place it in the context of the severe famine that struck Mecca amid the Quraysh's persistent denial; the phrase 'a manifest smoke' has been explained either as that famine or as a sign preceding the Last Hour, with scholars differing.
