قَدْ نَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُۥ لَيَحْزُنُكَ ٱلَّذِى يَقُولُونَ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يُكَذِّبُونَكَ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ يَجْحَدُونَ
We know that you, [O Muhammad], are saddened by what they say. And indeed, they do not call you untruthful, but it is the verses of Allah that the wrongdoers reject.
Abu Jahl's admission: 'We do not call you a liar'
33According to a report, Abu Jahl once said to the Prophet, "We do not call you a liar; to us you are trustworthy. It is what you have brought that we reject." As narrated in Tirmidhi, the verse was then revealed: "We surely know that what they say grieves you. In truth they do not deny you; rather, the wrongdoers knowingly reject the signs of God." The verse addresses the fact that the Meccan polytheists, though they called the Prophet "al-Amin" (the trustworthy), still rejected his message.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl-An'am is Meccan, dated to the late Meccan period; classical reports state that most of it was revealed all at once. It mounts a sustained defense of monotheism against the polytheistic beliefs, idolatrous customs and objections to revelation raised by the Meccan pagans.
