إِنَّكُمْ وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ حَصَبُ جَهَنَّمَ أَنتُمْ لَهَا وَٰرِدُونَ
Indeed, you [disbelievers] and what you worship other than Allah are the firewood of Hell. You will be coming to [enter] it.

Ibn az-Ziba'ra's objection
98–101According to the reports, when the verse "You and what you worship besides God are fuel for Hell" was revealed, the Qurayshi poet Abdullah ibn az-Ziba'ra objected: the angels, Uzayr and Jesus son of Mary were also worshipped, so by this logic they too would be in Hell. Thereupon the verse was revealed: "As for those for whom the best reward has already been decreed by Us, they will be kept far away from it." It was thus made clear that the ruling does not extend to righteous servants who never consented to being worshipped.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl-Anbiya is Meccan, dated to the middle Meccan period. It warns the heedless Meccan society that the reckoning is drawing near, and by recounting the chain of prophets it shows that Muhammad's call continues the same monotheistic tradition.
