يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلْأَنفَالِ قُلِ ٱلْأَنفَالُ لِلَّهِ وَٱلرَّسُولِ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَصْلِحُوا۟ ذَاتَ بَيْنِكُمْ وَأَطِيعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the bounties [of war]. Say, "The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allah and the Messenger." So fear Allah and amend that which is between you and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you should be believers.
The division of the spoils of Badr
1As narrated from Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas in Muslim, on the day of Badr Sa'd took a sword and asked the Prophet to grant it to him; the Prophet said, “It is neither yours nor mine; put it down.” When disagreement arose among the Companions over who owned the spoils, the verse was revealed: “They ask you about the spoils; say: the spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger,” leaving their division to the Prophet. It is also narrated from Ubada b. al-Samit that the opening of the sura came down concerning the spoils of Badr, when conduct over the booty had deteriorated.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl-Anfal is Medinan, with most of it revealed in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Badr (2 AH). It settles the dispute over the distribution of the spoils, interprets the course of the battle in the light of divine assistance, and lays down principles concerning the conduct of war.
