فَلَمْ تَقْتُلُوهُمْ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَتَلَهُمْ وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ رَمَىٰ وَلِيُبْلِىَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْهُ بَلَآءً حَسَنًا إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
And you did not kill them, but it was Allah who killed them. And you threw not, [O Muhammad], when you threw, but it was Allah who threw that He might test the believers with a good test. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

17According to the reports, on the day of Badr the Prophet took a handful of pebbles and cast them toward the polytheists, and the throw struck their eyes and contributed to their rout. It is narrated that the verse “You did not kill them, but Allah killed them; and when you threw, it was not you who threw, but Allah threw” was revealed about this event. It declared that victory belongs to Allah alone, while His servants are only means; some reports mention a similar throw at Hunayn, but most exegetes connect the verse with Badr.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl-Anfal is Medinan, with most of it revealed in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Badr (2 AH). It settles the dispute over the distribution of the spoils, interprets the course of the battle in the light of divine assistance, and lays down principles concerning the conduct of war.
