وَوَصَّيْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ حُسْنًا وَإِن جَٰهَدَاكَ لِتُشْرِكَ بِى مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَآ إِلَىَّ مَرْجِعُكُمْ فَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.
Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas and his mother
8As narrated in Muslim, when Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas embraced Islam, his mother swore she would neither eat nor speak until her son renounced his religion; she went without food and drink for days until she grew weak. Sa'd told her that he would not abandon his faith even if she had a hundred souls and each departed one by one. Thereupon the verse was revealed: "We have enjoined on man kindness to his parents; but if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them." The same event is also linked with the similar verse 31:15.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl-Ankabut is Meccan, dated to the late Meccan period, though some held its opening verses to be Medinan. In a climate of intensifying persecution it declares that faith will be tested through trials; some reports connect these verses with the hardships preceding the emigration to Abyssinia.
