Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideSurah al-Balad is Meccan, revealed in the early Meccan period. It opens with an oath by 'this city', Mecca, in which the Prophet dwelt, and declares that man was created amid hardship. Criticizing the denier who boasts of his wealth, it defines true virtue as scaling 'the steep ascent': freeing a slave, feeding the orphan and the destitute on a day of famine, and being among those who believe and counsel one another to patience and compassion.
