The change of the qibla to the Kaaba

According to the reports, after the hijra the Prophet prayed toward Bayt al-Maqdis in Jerusalem for about sixteen or seventeen months, while longing in his heart for the qibla to be turned to the Kaaba, turning his face toward the sky. As narrated from al-Bara b. Azib in Bukhari, when these verses were revealed the qibla was changed to the Sacred Mosque, and a congregation that learned of the change during prayer turned toward the Kaaba as they stood. When some of the Jews and hypocrites said, “What has turned them from the qibla they were on?”, the verses answered these objections as well.

Revelation context of the surah

Al-Baqarah was the first surah revealed in Medina, coming down in portions over an extended period beginning in the first years after the Hijra. Its main context is the founding of the Muslim community in Medina, relations with the People of the Book (especially the Jewish tribes), the conduct of the hypocrites, and the change of the qibla (2 AH). It contains foundational legislation on fasting, pilgrimage, family law and the prohibition of usury; the usury verses are reported to be among the last revealed.
