مَّثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ حَبَّةٍ أَنۢبَتَتْ سَبْعَ سَنَابِلَ فِى كُلِّ سُنۢبُلَةٍ مِّا۟ئَةُ حَبَّةٍ وَٱللَّهُ يُضَٰعِفُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَٱللَّهُ وَٰسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl-Baqarah was the first surah revealed in Medina, coming down in portions over an extended period beginning in the first years after the Hijra. Its main context is the founding of the Muslim community in Medina, relations with the People of the Book (especially the Jewish tribes), the conduct of the hypocrites, and the change of the qibla (2 AH). It contains foundational legislation on fasting, pilgrimage, family law and the prohibition of usury; the usury verses are reported to be among the last revealed.
