Al-Furqan 25:27

According to the reports, Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt had attended the Prophet's gatherings and inclined toward Islam. When his close friend Ubayy ibn Khalaf heard of this, he rebuked him harshly and swore he would not speak to him unless he openly showed hostility to the Prophet; Uqba complied and abused the Prophet. Thereupon the verses were revealed: "On that Day the wrongdoer will bite his hands, saying: 'Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger! Woe to me, would that I had never taken so-and-so as a friend!'" Uqba was killed at Badr, and Ubayy ibn Khalaf died of a wound inflicted by the Prophet at Uhud.

Vâhidî, Esbâbü'n-Nüzûl

Al-Furqan is Meccan, dated to the middle Meccan period. It answers the pagans' objections to the Quran ('tales of the ancients') and to the Prophet's ordinary human life, and in the 'servants of the Most Merciful' passage it paints a portrait of believing character.
