Context

The door of repentance for grave sinners

68–70

As narrated from Ibn Abbas in Bukhari, some people who in the age of polytheism had killed many and committed adultery came to the Prophet and asked: "What you say and call to is good; but can you tell us whether there is any expiation for what we have done?" Thereupon these verses were revealed: "They do not invoke any other god besides God, nor take a life God has made sacred except by right, nor commit adultery... except those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds; God will change their evil deeds into good", together with verse 39:53. Although the surah is counted as Meccan, the context of this report has led to differing assessments of when these verses came down.

Al-Furqan is Meccan, dated to the middle Meccan period. It answers the pagans' objections to the Quran ('tales of the ancients') and to the Prophet's ordinary human life, and in the 'servants of the Most Merciful' passage it paints a portrait of believing character.
