Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideThe predominant view holds al-Hadid to be Medinan, dated to the later years after the Hijra. It urges spending and sacrifice in God's cause, distinguishing in rank those who spent and fought 'before the victory' from those who did so after, a reference reports connect to the period before Hudaybiyyah or the conquest of Mecca. It also reminds the believers that the time has come for their hearts to soften to the remembrance of God.
