وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَحْيَاكُمْ ثُمَّ يُمِيتُكُمْ ثُمَّ يُحْيِيكُمْ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ لَكَفُورٌ
And He is the one who gave you life; then He causes you to die and then will [again] give you life. Indeed, mankind is ungrateful.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideThe dating of al-Hajj is disputed; it is generally held to contain both Meccan and Medinan verses. The verses granting the wronged believers permission to fight (39-40) are reported to have come down around the time of the Hijra. The redefinition of the pilgrimage on the axis of pure monotheism is a distinctive theme of the surah.
