يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِن جَآءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌۢ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوٓا۟ أَن تُصِيبُوا۟ قَوْمًۢا بِجَهَٰلَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَٰدِمِينَ
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
The zakat report of Walid b. Uqba
6According to the reports, the Prophet sent Walid b. Uqba to collect the zakat of the Banu Mustaliq. When the tribe came out in a body to welcome him, Walid, assuming because of an old enmity that they meant to kill him, turned back and reported, “They refused the zakat and wanted to kill me.” The Prophet sent Khalid b. al-Walid to investigate, and the report proved false. It is narrated that the verse was revealed about this incident: “O you who believe, if a corrupt person brings you news, verify it, lest you harm a people in ignorance and become regretful for what you have done.”

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl-Hujurat is Medinan, dated to the late Medinan period, largely around the Year of Delegations (9 AH). According to reports, some of its verses came down when the delegation of Banu Tamim called out rudely from outside the Prophet's chambers (hujurat). It regulates etiquette toward the Prophet and social ethics such as mockery, backbiting and suspicion.
