سُبْحَٰنَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَسْرَىٰ بِعَبْدِهِۦ لَيْلًا مِّنَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ إِلَى ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْأَقْصَا ٱلَّذِى بَٰرَكْنَا حَوْلَهُۥ لِنُرِيَهُۥ مِنْ ءَايَٰتِنَآ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْبَصِيرُ
Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
The Night Journey (Isra)
1This verse refers to the Prophet being taken by night from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca to al-Masjid al-Aqsa (the Isra); the event is related in hadiths found in Bukhari and Muslim. According to the widely accepted view, the journey took place shortly before the Hijra. Reports state that when the Prophet recounted the event, Quraysh denied it, while Abu Bakr affirmed it without hesitation, earning the title "as-Siddiq" (the ever-truthful).

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl-Isra is Meccan, dated to the late Meccan period; it takes its name from the Night Journey, which the predominant view places about a year to a year and a half before the Hijra. It contains references to the history of the Children of Israel and sets out a comprehensive charter of moral principles.
