قُلِ ٱدْعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ أَوِ ٱدْعُوا۟ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنَ أَيًّا مَّا تَدْعُوا۟ فَلَهُ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ وَلَا تَجْهَرْ بِصَلَاتِكَ وَلَا تُخَافِتْ بِهَا وَٱبْتَغِ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ سَبِيلًا
Say, "Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names." And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way.
Moderating the voice in prayer
110As narrated from Ibn Abbas in Bukhari and Muslim, this verse was revealed while the Prophet was still concealed in Mecca. When he raised his voice while leading his companions in prayer, the polytheists would hear it and hurl insults at the Quran, at the One who sent it down, and at the one who brought it. Thereupon the verse was revealed: "Do not be loud in your prayer, nor silent in it, but seek a way between."

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl-Isra is Meccan, dated to the late Meccan period; it takes its name from the Night Journey, which the predominant view places about a year to a year and a half before the Hijra.
