وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلرُّوحِ قُلِ ٱلرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّى وَمَآ أُوتِيتُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا
And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And mankind have not been given of knowledge except a little."
The question about the spirit (ruh)
85As narrated from Ibn Mas'ud in Bukhari, while the Prophet was passing by a group of Jews in Medina, they asked him about the nature of the spirit (ruh); he remained silent for a while, and then the verse was revealed to him: "They ask you about the spirit. Say: The spirit is of the command of my Lord, and you have been given only a little knowledge." In a report from Ibn Abbas, however, it was the Quraysh in Mecca who asked, at the prompting of the Jews. Since the surah is counted as Meccan, scholars have reconciled the two reports in different ways, some suggesting the verse may have been revealed twice.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl-Isra is Meccan, dated to the late Meccan period; it takes its name from the Night Journey, which the predominant view places about a year to a year and a half before the Hijra. It contains references to the history of the Children of Israel and sets out a comprehensive charter of moral principles.
