Al-Jinn 72:2

As narrated from Ibn Abbas in Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet was leading the dawn prayer at a place called Nakhla while travelling with a group of companions toward the fair of Ukaz. A company of jinn, who had been barred from listening to the news of heaven, heard the Quran being recited and returned to their people saying, "This is what has come between us and the news of heaven." Thereupon the verses were revealed to the Prophet: "Say: It has been revealed to me that a company of jinn listened, and said: 'We have heard a wondrous Quran that guides to the right way.'"

Surah al-Jinn is Meccan, revealed in the late Meccan period, according to reports around the time of the Prophet's journey to Ta'if (about the tenth year of prophethood). The surah relates that a group of jinn listened to the Quran being recited, believed, and returned to their people with the news; a report on this event is transmitted from Ibn Abbas in Bukhari and Muslim. It thereby underscores that the call is not limited to humankind and that knowledge of the unseen belongs to God.
