وَإِذَا رَأَوْا۟ تِجَٰرَةً أَوْ لَهْوًا ٱنفَضُّوٓا۟ إِلَيْهَا وَتَرَكُوكَ قَآئِمًا قُلْ مَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَيْرٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهْوِ وَمِنَ ٱلتِّجَٰرَةِ وَٱللَّهُ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَ
But when they saw a transaction or a diversion, [O Muhammad], they rushed to it and left you standing. Say, "What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a transaction, and Allah is the best of providers."
Rushing to the caravan during the sermon
11As narrated from Jabir b. Abdullah in Bukhari and Muslim, one Friday while the Prophet was delivering the sermon, a trade caravan arrived in Medina from Syria. It was a time of scarcity and high prices; hearing the caravan being welcomed with drumbeats, most of the congregation left the mosque and headed for it, and only twelve people remained with the Prophet. Thereupon the verse was revealed: “When they saw some merchandise or amusement, they rushed to it and left you standing.”

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideSurah al-Jumu'a is Medinan, revealed in the setting in which the Friday prayer was instituted in Medina. As related from Jabir ibn Abdullah in Bukhari and Muslim, while the Prophet was delivering the Friday sermon a trade caravan arrived and most of the congregation left the sermon for it; the final verse of the surah came down concerning this incident. The surah also addresses, through the example of the People of the Book, those who were given scripture yet failed to carry its obligations.
