Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideSurah al-Ma'arij is Meccan. Its opening verses were revealed in response to a denier who mockingly demanded that the punishment come upon them at once; reports identify this person as al-Nadr ibn al-Harith. The surah declares that the punishment will certainly come to pass, though measures of time with God differ, and it depicts scenes of the Judgment, the impatient nature of man, and the qualities of the people of prayer.
