يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُحَرِّمُوا۟ طَيِّبَٰتِ مَآ أَحَلَّ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَلَا تَعْتَدُوٓا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُعْتَدِينَ
O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful to you and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.
Those who forbade themselves lawful things
87–88According to the reports, some Companions inclined toward renouncing worldly life and considered forbidding themselves meat, women and restful sleep; the name of Uthman b. Maz'un is mentioned in this connection. In a report from Ibn Abbas, a man said, “When I eat meat my desire for women increases, so I have forbidden meat to myself,” whereupon the verse was revealed: “O you who believe, do not forbid the good things Allah has made lawful to you, and do not transgress.” The following verse commands eating of what Allah has provided, lawful and good.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl-Ma'idah is Medinan and among the last surahs revealed; the predominant view places it in the period from after Hudaybiyyah up to the Farewell Pilgrimage. It emphasizes fidelity to covenants, dietary rulings, and assessments of the People of the Book, especially the Christians. The verse 'This day I have perfected your religion for you' is reported to have been revealed at Arafat during the Farewell Pilgrimage (10 AH).
