O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.

Context

The final prohibition of wine

90–91

With these verses, the final stage of the process, the prohibition of wine became absolute. As narrated from Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas in Muslim, Sa'd was wounded on the nose with a camel's jawbone by one of the Ansar during a boastful quarrel at a drinking gathering, and he himself relates that the verse about wine was revealed in connection with such incidents. It is reported that when the verse came down, Umar said, “We have desisted, O Lord!” As narrated from Anas in Bukhari, when the prohibition was proclaimed Anas was serving drink to Abu Talha and his companions; at the order “Pour it out!” the vessels were emptied, and that day wine flowed in the streets of Medina.
