The call at Safa and Abu Lahab
Surah-wideAs narrated from Ibn Abbas in Bukhari and Muslim, when the verse "Warn your nearest kindred" was revealed, the Prophet climbed the hill of Safa and called out to the clans of Quraysh. He asked, "If I told you that horsemen were advancing on you from this valley, would you believe me?" They answered, "Yes, we have known nothing but truth from you." When he said, "Then I am a warner to you before a severe punishment," his uncle Abu Lahab retorted, "May you perish! Is this why you gathered us?" Thereupon Surah al-Masad was revealed, beginning: "May the two hands of Abu Lahab perish — and perish he did."
