Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideSurah al-Mulk is Meccan, according to the prevailing view revealed in the middle Meccan period. Rather than responding to a single incident, it addresses the general Meccan setting in which the polytheists denied the resurrection and rejected the Prophet's call. The surah stresses that sovereignty and power belong to God and that death and life were created as a test, summoning the deniers to reflect on the universe.
