وَإِن فَاتَكُمْ شَىْءٌ مِّنْ أَزْوَٰجِكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْكُفَّارِ فَعَاقَبْتُمْ فَـَٔاتُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ذَهَبَتْ أَزْوَٰجُهُم مِّثْلَ مَآ أَنفَقُوا۟ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنتُم بِهِۦ مُؤْمِنُونَ
And if you have lost any of your wives to the disbelievers and you subsequently obtain [something], then give those whose wives have gone the equivalent of what they had spent. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.
Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideSurah al-Mumtahana is Medinan, revealed in the period between the Treaty of Hudaybiyya and the conquest of Mecca (around 8 AH). Its opening verses came down when the companion Hatib ibn Abi Balta'a secretly sent a letter to Mecca disclosing preparations for the conquest, and they regulated believers' ties of allegiance with a hostile party. The surah also contains rulings on testing the believing women who emigrated to Medina, from which it takes its name ('she who is examined').
