63:5

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا۟ يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ لَوَّوْا۟ رُءُوسَهُمْ وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ وَهُم مُّسْتَكْبِرُونَ

And when it is said to them, "Come, the Messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you," they turn their heads aside and you see them evading while they are arrogant.

Context

Ibn Ubayy's words and the vindication of Zayd b. Arqam

As narrated from Zayd b. Arqam in Bukhari, during the Banu Mustaliq expedition, after a quarrel between a man of the Emigrants and a man of the Ansar, the chief of the hypocrites Abdullah b. Ubayy said, “Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah, so that they disperse; if we return to Medina, the mightier will surely expel the weaker from it.” Zayd reported these words to the Prophet; when Ibn Ubayy denied them on oath, Zayd was left appearing a liar and was deeply grieved. Surat al-Munafiqun was then revealed, confirming Zayd, and the Prophet said to him, “O Zayd, Allah has verified your word.”

Revelation context of the surah

Surah-wide

Surah al-Munafiqun is Medinan, revealed during or immediately after the campaign against Banu Mustaliq (al-Muraysi'), in 5 or 6 AH. On that campaign the leader of the hypocrites, Abdullah ibn Ubayy, said words to the effect that 'when we return to Medina, the mightier will expel the weaker'; Zayd ibn Arqam, who heard him, reported it to the Prophet, and when Ibn Ubayy denied it the surah came down confirming Zayd. The surah exposes the true character of the hypocrites and their false oaths.
