Al-Muzzammil 73:2

As narrated from Aisha in Muslim, when the opening of Surah al-Muzzammil was revealed, night prayer became obligatory; the Prophet and his companions stood in vigil so long that their feet would swell, and this continued for a year. God withheld the closing verse of the surah in heaven for twelve months; when it was finally revealed, the burden was lightened and the night prayer became voluntary rather than obligatory. It is also reported that this closing verse (73:20) was revealed in Medina.

Surah al-Muzzammil is Meccan, one of the surahs revealed in the first years of the prophetic mission. Addressing the Prophet as 'O you wrapped in garments', it commands him to rise for night prayer and to recite the Quran in measured tones, preparing him for the weighty burden of revelation and the task of proclamation. The final verse, which lightened the night vigil, is reported to have come down later, according to the predominant report in the Medinan period.
