Al-Qamar 54:1

As narrated from Anas ibn Malik in Bukhari and Muslim, the people of Mecca asked the Prophet to show them a sign, whereupon the moon was shown split in two. In Ibn Mas'ud's narration, the moon was seen in two sections and the Prophet said, "Bear witness." The verses "The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split. Yet whenever they see a sign, they turn away and say, 'Passing magic'" are linked to this event.

Al-Qamar is Meccan, dated to the middle Meccan period. It opens with a reference to the splitting of the moon, an event related in sound reports; the Quraysh, who persisted in denial nonetheless, are warned through the fates of the peoples of Noah, Ad, Thamud, Lot and Pharaoh.
