Verses revealed concerning the Battle of Uhud
121–128These verses were revealed concerning the Battle of Uhud in the third year of the hijra; they mention the Prophet positioning his Companions in the morning and two contingents inclining to lose heart. As narrated from Jabir in Bukhari, the two groups were the Banu Salima and the Banu Haritha, and Jabir said they would not have wished the verse unrevealed, since it declares “Allah is the protector of both.” Also in Bukhari it is narrated that the verse “Not for you is the decision at all” came down after the Prophet was wounded at Uhud and invoked against certain leaders of the polytheists, some of whom later became Muslims.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl Imran is Medinan. According to classical reports, its opening section was revealed in the context of the debates with the Christian delegation from Najran concerning the nature of Jesus, culminating in the call to mutual imprecation (mubahala). A substantial portion of the surah then reviews the setback at the Battle of Uhud (3 AH), consoling the believers and drawing lessons from it.
