The state of the martyrs of Uhud
169–170
According to the reports these verses were revealed concerning the martyrs of Uhud. As narrated in Muslim, it was made known that the souls of the martyrs roam Paradise within green birds and that their Lord honors them; the verse “Do not think of those slain in the way of Allah as dead; rather they are alive, provided for with their Lord” was revealed in this context. As narrated in Tirmidhi, the Prophet told Jabir, son of Abdullah b. Amr who fell at Uhud, that Allah had spoken to his father directly and asked his wish. Some reports also state that the verses concerned the Quran reciters martyred at Bi'r Ma'una.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wide
Al Imran is Medinan. According to classical reports, its opening section was revealed in the context of the debates with the Christian delegation from Najran concerning the nature of Jesus, culminating in the call to mutual imprecation (mubahala). A substantial portion of the surah then reviews the setback at the Battle of Uhud (3 AH), consoling the believers and drawing lessons from it.
