لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَآ أَتَوا۟ وَّيُحِبُّونَ أَن يُحْمَدُوا۟ بِمَا لَمْ يَفْعَلُوا۟ فَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّهُم بِمَفَازَةٍ مِّنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
And never think that those who rejoice in what they have perpetrated and like to be praised for what they did not do - never think them [to be] in safety from the punishment, and for them is a painful punishment.
Those who love to be praised for what they did not do
188As narrated in Bukhari, Marwan b. al-Hakam asked about this verse, saying, “If everyone who rejoices in what he has done and loves to be praised for what he has not done will be punished, we shall all be punished.” Ibn Abbas explained that the verse was revealed about the People of the Book: the Prophet asked them something, and they concealed the truth, showed him something else, and sought praise for it. In the report from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, the verse concerned the hypocrites who stayed behind from a campaign and then offered false excuses, wishing to be praised.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAl Imran is Medinan. According to classical reports, its opening section was revealed in the context of the debates with the Christian delegation from Najran concerning the nature of Jesus, culminating in the call to mutual imprecation (mubahala). A substantial portion of the surah then reviews the setback at the Battle of Uhud (3 AH), consoling the believers and drawing lessons from it.
