Juz 3 · Page 57

Then whoever argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you - say, "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars [among us]."

Context

The Najran delegation and the mubahala

59–61

In the later Medinan years a delegation of Christians from Najran came to Medina and disputed with the Prophet about the nature of Jesus. Thereupon the verse “The likeness of Jesus with Allah is as the likeness of Adam; He created him from dust” was revealed, together with the verse calling those who persisted in the dispute to a mutual invocation of God's curse (mubahala) with their families. As narrated in Muslim, when the mubahala verse came down the Prophet gathered Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Husayn to his side. The Najran delegation declined the mubahala and returned home after concluding a treaty to pay the jizya.

Revelation context of the surah

Surah-wide

Al Imran is Medinan. According to classical reports, its opening section was revealed in the context of the debates with the Christian delegation from Najran concerning the nature of Jesus, culminating in the call to mutual imprecation (mubahala). A substantial portion of the surah then reviews the setback at the Battle of Uhud (3 AH), consoling the believers and drawing lessons from it.
