وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّمَا يُعَلِّمُهُۥ بَشَرٌ لِّسَانُ ٱلَّذِى يُلْحِدُونَ إِلَيْهِ أَعْجَمِىٌّ وَهَٰذَا لِسَانٌ عَرَبِىٌّ مُّبِينٌ
And We certainly know that they say, "It is only a human being who teaches the Prophet." The tongue of the one they refer to is foreign, and this Qur'an is [in] a clear Arabic language.
The claim 'a mere human teaches him'
103The Meccan polytheists claimed that the Prophet was learning the Quran from a foreigner living in Mecca. Reports identify this person as a Christian slave named Jabr, though his name is given differently in some accounts. The verse revealed in response refutes the claim by pointing out that the tongue of the person they alluded to was foreign (non-Arabic), while the Quran is in clear Arabic speech.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAn-Nahl is Meccan, dated to the late Meccan period; there is a report that its closing verses on retaliation were revealed in Medina after Uhud. It marshals proofs of God's oneness through His blessings, and counsels the persecuted believers to be patient and to invite with wisdom and fair exhortation.
