The recitation of Surah an-Najm and the mass prostration
Surah-wideAs narrated from Ibn Mas'ud in Bukhari, the Prophet recited Surah an-Najm and prostrated at its end; everyone present, Muslim and polytheist alike, prostrated with him. Only one old man took a handful of pebbles, raised it to his forehead and said, "This suffices me"; reports identify him as Umayya ibn Khalaf. Ibn Mas'ud says he later saw that man killed as a disbeliever. The event is related as one of the notable moments of the early period, when the surah was recited openly in Mecca and its impact moved even the polytheists to prostrate.
