The theft case of Tu'ma b. Ubayriq
105–113According to the reports, Tu'ma b. Ubayriq stole a coat of mail in Medina and planted it in the house of a Jew, casting the blame on him; his clan then came to the Prophet asking him to defend Tu'ma. As the Prophet was about to act on the apparent evidence, these verses were revealed, commanding him not to plead for the treacherous and disclosing the truth. The verses declare that whoever commits an offense and then casts it upon an innocent person bears a manifest slander and a grave sin. The reports add that Tu'ma later fled to Mecca.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAn-Nisa is Medinan, dated predominantly to the period after Uhud (roughly 3-5 AH). Against the background of the orphans and widows left by warfare, it lays down comprehensive rulings on inheritance, marriage and the rights of women. The conduct of the hypocrites and relations with the People of the Book are also major themes.
