And for you is half of what your wives leave if they have no child. But if they have a child, for you is one fourth of what they leave, after any bequest they [may have] made or debt. And for the wives is one fourth if you leave no child. But if you leave a child, then for them is an eighth of what you leave, after any bequest you [may have] made or debt. And if a man or woman leaves neither ascendants nor descendants but has a brother or a sister, then for each one of them is a sixth. But if they are more than two, they share a third, after any bequest which was made or debt, as long as there is no detriment [caused]. [This is] an ordinance from Allah, and Allah is Knowing and Forbearing.

The revelation of the inheritance verses

11–12

As narrated from Jabir b. Abdullah in Bukhari, Jabir fell seriously ill and the Prophet visited him; when Jabir asked, “What shall I do with my property?”, the inheritance verses were revealed. In another report, the widow of Sa'd b. al-Rabi', who was martyred at Uhud, complained to the Prophet that her brother-in-law had taken all the property, leaving nothing for her two daughters; thereupon the inheritance verses came down, and the Prophet ruled two thirds for the daughters, an eighth for the mother, and the remainder for the uncle. The verses established an order in which the shares are fixed by Allah rather than left to personal whim.

Revelation context of the surah

Surah-wide

An-Nisa is Medinan, dated predominantly to the period after Uhud (roughly 3-5 AH). Against the background of the orphans and widows left by warfare, it lays down comprehensive rulings on inheritance, marriage and the rights of women. The conduct of the hypocrites and relations with the People of the Book are also major themes.
