An-Nisa 4:65

As narrated in Bukhari, Zubayr b. al-Awwam and a man of the Ansar disputed over the watercourse irrigating their palm groves at al-Harra. The Prophet ruled, “O Zubayr, irrigate, then let the water flow to your neighbor”; when the Ansari said, “Is it because he is your aunt's son?”, the Prophet's face changed and he then told Zubayr to take his right in full. Zubayr related his conviction that the verse “But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge in what is disputed among them, then find no discomfort in themselves at your ruling and submit fully” was revealed about this incident.

An-Nisa is Medinan, dated predominantly to the period after Uhud (roughly 3-5 AH). Against the background of the orphans and widows left by warfare, it lays down comprehensive rulings on inheritance, marriage and the rights of women. The conduct of the hypocrites and relations with the People of the Book are also major themes.
