An-Nisa 4:88

Juz 5 · Page 92

What is [the matter] with you [that you are] two groups concerning the hypocrites, while Allah has made them fall back [into error and disbelief] for what they earned. Do you wish to guide those whom Allah has sent astray? And he whom Allah sends astray - never will you find for him a way [of guidance].

Context

The disagreement over the hypocrites who turned back at Uhud

88

As narrated from Zayd b. Thabit in Bukhari, when the army marched out to Uhud, Abdullah b. Ubayy and those with him broke away and returned to Medina. The Companions split into two groups about these deserters; one said, “Let us fight and kill them,” while the other opposed it. Thereupon the verse was revealed: “What is the matter with you that you are two parties concerning the hypocrites, while Allah has cast them back for what they earned?”

Buhârî 4589; Müslim 2776

Surah-wide

An-Nisa is Medinan, dated predominantly to the period after Uhud (roughly 3-5 AH). Against the background of the orphans and widows left by warfare, it lays down comprehensive rulings on inheritance, marriage and the rights of women. The conduct of the hypocrites and relations with the People of the Book are also major themes.
