Among those implicated in the ifk slander was Mistah b. Uthatha, a poor relative whom Abu Bakr supported. When the verses of vindication were revealed and Aisha was cleared, Abu Bakr swore he would never help Mistah again. Thereupon the verse came down: “Let not those of virtue and wealth among you swear not to give to relatives, the needy and the emigrants in the way of Allah; let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love that Allah should forgive you?” As narrated in Bukhari, Abu Bakr said, “Indeed, I love that Allah should forgive me,” and resumed his support of Mistah.
