Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideSurah ash-Shams is Meccan, held to belong to the early Meccan period. After a succession of oaths, it declares that whoever purifies his soul has succeeded, while whoever buries it in sin has failed. As a historical example of this truth it recalls the story of Thamud, destroyed for their insolence after hamstringing the she-camel, and warns the Meccans against the same fate.
