وَءَاخَرُونَ ٱعْتَرَفُوا۟ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا۟ عَمَلًا صَٰلِحًا وَءَاخَرَ سَيِّئًا عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
And [there are] others who have acknowledged their sins. They had mixed a righteous deed with another that was bad. Perhaps Allah will turn to them in forgiveness. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Abu Lubaba binding himself to the pillar
102According to the reports, this verse was revealed concerning a group of Companions who confessed their sins and repented. In the well-known account, Abu Lubaba — who had stayed behind from Tabuk, or by another report erred during the siege of Banu Qurayza — bound himself in remorse to a pillar of the Prophet's Mosque and swore he would not release himself until his repentance was accepted. When the verse came down, “And others have confessed their sins, having mixed a righteous deed with an evil one; it may be that Allah will accept their repentance,” the Prophet released him with his own hand. The sources differ as to whether the incident belongs to Tabuk or to the Qurayza episode.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAt-Tawbah is Medinan and among the very last surahs revealed (around 9 AH). Its main context is the Tabuk campaign, those who stayed behind from it, and the conduct of the hypocrites; it also declares the repudiation of treaties with the polytheists who had violated them. Its proclamations are reported to have been announced by Ali during the pilgrimage of 9 AH; it is the only surah that does not open with the basmala.
