At-Tawbah 9:79

Juz 10 · Page 199

Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort, so they ridicule them - Allah will ridicule them, and they will have a painful punishment.

Context

Those who mocked the voluntary givers of charity

79

As narrated in Bukhari, when the command of charity came, the Companions would carry loads on their backs and bring charity from their earnings. Of those who brought much, such as Abd al-Rahman b. Awf, the hypocrites said, “He is showing off,” while they mocked the poor, such as Abu Aqil who could bring only a sa' of dates, saying, “Allah has no need of his charity.” Thereupon the verse was revealed: “Those who defame the believers who give voluntarily in charity and those who find nothing but their effort, and ridicule them — Allah will ridicule them.”

Revelation context of the surah

Surah-wide

At-Tawbah is Medinan and among the very last surahs revealed (around 9 AH). Its main context is the Tabuk campaign, those who stayed behind from it, and the conduct of the hypocrites; it also declares the repudiation of treaties with the polytheists who had violated them. Its proclamations are reported to have been announced by Ali during the pilgrimage of 9 AH; it is the only surah that does not open with the basmala.
