قُلْ يَٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
'Do not despair of God's mercy'
53As narrated from Ibn Abbas in Bukhari, some people who had killed many and committed adultery in the age of polytheism asked the Prophet whether their deeds could ever be forgiven. Thereupon the verse was revealed: "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of God's mercy. Surely God forgives all sins; He is the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful." Although the surah is counted as Meccan, some scholars prefer the reports indicating that this particular verse was revealed in Medina.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideAz-Zumar is Meccan, dated to the late Meccan period. It rejects polytheism on the axis of devoting religion sincerely to God alone. According to reports, the verse 'God's earth is spacious' is associated with the believers compelled by persecution to emigrate, namely those who went to Abyssinia.
