وَوَصَّيْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُۥ وَهْنًا عَلَىٰ وَهْنٍ وَفِصَٰلُهُۥ فِى عَامَيْنِ أَنِ ٱشْكُرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَيْكَ إِلَىَّ ٱلْمَصِيرُ
And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.
Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideLuqman is Meccan, dated to the middle-to-late Meccan period. Framed by Luqman's counsel to his son, it teaches monotheism, gratitude and moral conduct. According to reports, the verse on 'idle talk' was revealed concerning those who tried to divert people from the Quran with entertaining tales.
