مَا كَانَ لِلَّهِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ مِن وَلَدٍ سُبْحَٰنَهُۥٓ إِذَا قَضَىٰٓ أَمْرًا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ
It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideMaryam is Meccan, dated to the middle Meccan period. It is reported that Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, among the Muslims who emigrated to Abyssinia, recited from this surah before the Negus. Its measured account of Mary and Jesus has been seen as fitting that encounter with a Christian ruler.
