As narrated from Ibn Abbas in Bukhari, the Prophet asked Gabriel, "What prevents you from visiting us more often than you do?" Thereupon the verse was revealed: "We descend only by the command of your Lord. To Him belongs what is before us, what is behind us, and what is in between. And your Lord is never forgetful." The verse declares that revelation comes not by the angels' own choosing but solely by God's command.

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wide
Maryam is Meccan, dated to the middle Meccan period. It is reported that Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, among the Muslims who emigrated to Abyssinia, recited from this surah before the Negus. Its measured account of Mary and Jesus has been seen as fitting that encounter with a Christian ruler.
