قَالُوا۟ لَئِنْ أَكَلَهُ ٱلذِّئْبُ وَنَحْنُ عُصْبَةٌ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّخَٰسِرُونَ
They said, "If a wolf should eat him while we are a [strong] clan, indeed, we would then be losers."

Revelation context of the surah
Surah-wideYusuf is Meccan, dated to the late Meccan period, according to reports around the distressing years of the 'year of sorrow'. One report states it was revealed in response to a question about the story of Joseph. It consoles the Prophet and the believers in their hardship through the story of Joseph as a model of patience rewarded with a good outcome.
